Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, has hit back at growing public criticism linking Chinese nationals to illegal mining in Ghana, known locally as galamsey. According to him, the blame is often misdirected and unfair.

He expressed frustration over online backlash and general assumptions about China’s role in the ongoing environmental crisis during a media engagement at his private residence in Accra,

“Some of those who were caught red-handed are just migrant workers… I have a social media and when I post on X, people tag me with galamsey as if galamsey is caused by China. It is unfair to me. It is really unfair to me and to the majority of Chinese,” he stated.
