We Cannot Keep Subsidising Ghana”: US Senator Slams Ablakwa Over His Trip To Washington DC

James Risch, Chair of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, has stated that mounting financial commitments to China while allegedly neglecting obligations to US companies and taxpayers.

Citing Ghana’s direct larger repayments to Beijing, China, the top-ranking member of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations criticized Ghana's approach to debt servicing, stating that the US cannot continue supporting the country financially.

Senator Risch declared, "Instead of a trip to DC, Ghana's foreign minister should focus on honoring his government's commitments to repay US companies and the American taxpayers. We cannot keep subsidizing Ghana while it continues paying far larger debts to China."

This follows a diplomatic engagement between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and senior US officials at the State Department.

The discussion in Washington centered on strengthening US-Ghana relations, with a particular focus on trade, immigration, and the looming threat of visa sanctions against Ghanaian nationals.
