Why Captain Smart and Onua TV should be blamed for Obuasi clash
Ras Mubarak has pointed fingers at Onua TV and broadcast journalist Captain Smart over the violence in Obuasi, which resulted in the deaths of eight unidentified people.
The clash, which saw illegal miners storm the AngloGold Ashanti mine, followed controversial comments made by Onua TV’s Captain Smart, urging the youth to "attack the mine" and take what’s theirs.
While media freedom is crucial, should platforms like Onua TV be held accountable for statements that could incite violence?
Mubarak believes this is a case of free speech gone too far. He argues, “We can’t live in a country with such wanton indiscipline.”
The clash incident in Obuasi is alledgely premised on a video showing Onua TV's morning show host, Captain Smart, making controversial statements that seemed to encourage violence.
In the video, Captain Smart, addressing the youth of Obuasi, urged them to take action against the mine, stating, "Ghanaian youth in Obuasi, go to the mine.
Attack the mine and take what you want so that when you get hungry, you get something to eat." He continued, "AGA, if you are not careful, we will take you out of this country."
